The Cincinnati Reds acquired six new players on Friday including Jeff Fiorentino (OF) off waivers from the Orioles and Andy Phillips who played in 61 and 110 games for the Yankees in 2007 and 2006 respectively. The Redlegs also signed pitchers Jim Brower and Adam Pettyjohn and infielders Adam Green and Jolbert Cabrera to minor-league deals. All players have invites to Spring Training but if nothing else these acquisitions have stocked the Triple-A roster.
One of the most interesting pieces of commentary concerning the Andy Phillips signing comes from LoHud, a Yankees blog written by beat writer Peter Abraham. Since the the Reds now have Scott Hatteberg, Andy Phillips, and Joey Votto at first base, could Votto be used as a trading card for pitching? This seems to be a likely scenario. I would be all for it if it helps bring someone like Eric Bedard to Cincy.
