I'm counting down the days until Opening Day in Cincinnati when the 2008 baseball season officially starts. I know that the Red Sox and the A's have technically played two regular season games but, in my book, the season hasn't started yet. Maybe some of you baseball traditionalists or fellow Reds fans agree with me. Furman Bisher of the Atlanta Journal Constitution does. Sure he sounds like a crotchety old man, ranting and raving about the Japanese and Pearl Harbor, but I agree with most of what he has to say.
There is just something special about Opening Day in the Queen City. Since 1869 the Redlegs have been given the honor of playing the first game of the season... that lasted until several years ago when television and the lords of money took over. Isn't anything sacred anymore?
Regardless, I will be celebrating Opening Day in Cincinnati, taking in the sights and sounds, the parade, and this year a tribute to, one of baseball great people, Joe Nuxhall.

I'm not a Jay Mariotti fan but he wrote on this subject today as did Big League Stew (of which I AM a HUGE fan).

Amen.
Every baseball fan should experience opening day in Cincinnati at least once.
Rest in peace, Joe Nuxhall. He was a pretty good baseball player and a really good announcer, and I'm glad I got to experience him on Reds radio before he died.
