July 12, 2008: A special day for faithful Pirates fans

July 12, 2008 at PNC Park will be a day that I will never forget. I was there to witness one of the greatest comebacks in the long and glorious history of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club.

Pirates fans haven't had a lot to celebrate for oh... over 15 years now, but Saturday night's 12-11 win over the St. Louis Cardinals was something that Bucco fans can add to their favorite memory book.

The game was basically a blow out until the Pirates battled back in the 8th and 9th innings to send the game into extras. Troy Glaus seemed to take the wind out of the sails of the Bucco comeback with a solo homer in the top of the 10th. Then it happened... this gritty 2008 Pirates team battled back yet again and Jason Michaels hit a 2-run blast 411ft blast to win the game for the Buccaneers of the Allegheny.

A lot of fans left the park when it started to rain during the later innings but the tried-and-true Bucco rooters who did stay sure saw a treat. What a win! It's still hard to explain. Fans didn't want to leave PNC Park. We just stood there and watched Jason Michaels do an interview and get a shaving cream pie in the face. Walking out people were singing "Let's Go Bucs" and slapping high fives - it was like the Pirates has just one a playoff game - something that we haven't experienced since 1992.

Participating in this small, but joyous, celebration made me think about how great it's going to be when the Buccos actually win a big one. Yes, I mean division championships, playoff games, NL Pennants, and World Series championships. No, I haven't been drinking... I'm serious. Sure, I am somewhat of a romantic but I am extremely faithful. I do believe that all of this "suffering" that we Pirates fans have been experiencing over the past decade plus will pay off in the end... and that will make our reward as faithful fans that much sweeter.

I mean think about it... what are the chances that the Pirates will have a long championship drought like the Red Sox has or the Cubs currently have? ... It will happen Bucco fans. Keep the faith.

Wow, that's awesome! Glad you got to go and never left. Those are solid pictures. I was getting a kick out of the shaving cream, too. Great post!
