Keeping the Fam-a-lee together

The Pirates have four series coming up against three bad teams: Rockies, Astros, Padres, and Rockies again. Some would think that if the Buccos can string together some wins and win three out of four of these series, they might get themselves back into the race of the NL Central. In turn, many Pirates that have been perpetually on the trading block (Jack Wilson, Xavier Nady, Jason Bay) might get to stay in the 'burgh.

Dejan Kovacevic of P-G says that it doesn't matter. This is the bitter reality of being a Pirates fan for the past decade plus but it seems even sadder this year. The 2008 have done something that hasn't happened for quite a while, they've bonded together... the young Pirates, with the help of veteran leadership and John Russell, are learning how to win. Trading away players like Jason Bay and Jack Wilson (especially) would be a mistake in my opinion. They are tenured players who want to win wearing the black & gold. Their presence on the field at PNC Park and in the Pirates clubhouse is special and would not carry over to another team or be replaced in a trade. Maybe I have no argument here... I'm just a very conservative and loyal person.

Pittsburgh Lumber Co. has a great roundtable discussion among Pirates bloggers on the subject of a Jack Wilson trade.

Here's what some of the players have to say:
"From a player's standpoint, it would be a shame to see anybody go," catcher Ryan Doumit said. "We know the names that are out there, Xavier Nady and Jason Bay, and those guys are an integral part of clubhouse and the chemistry we have. ...Dude, to lose one of those guys would be, in my mind, a significant blow. They're big pieces of the gel that keeps this team together."

"The chemistry in here is probably as good as any in the majors," reliever Tyler Yates said. "Yeah, we'd like to keep it together. We're 12 1/2 games out of first. We know that. We know we don't have much chance at the playoffs. But we're playing hard, we're having fun, and we'd love the chance to keep going."

I hope they don't make a trade. I think they have the ability to put a respectable second half together and build for next season. My cable company is out of Youngstown so I get to enjoy both Cleveland and Pittsburgh games!
