Surprisingly, the Reds have been doing a good job of playing spoilers. Their latest victim, the Milwaukee Brewers (a.k.a. "Bud's Team"). I have a confession to make... I haven't watched (or listened) to more than a handful of Reds games since the Griffey and Dunn trades. The players look lost, I'm sick of hearing Marty complain, and I'd like to see some evidence of a plan from Bob & Walt Co. (Lord knows that the letter to fans didn't give us that and the fact that Corey Patterson is still playing doesn't help). Regardless, the best sportswriter in America, Hal McCoy, keeps truckin' and here is just a excerpt of his brilliant prose describing Friday night's 11-2 win:
On Friday night, Sept. 19, in Cincinnati, they began torturing the Milwaukee Brewers again, an 11-2 annihilation that put another carpenter's nail in Milwaukee's playoff door...
The home runs kept coming, and it looked as if the stacks in center field would run out of smoke, or the Reds would be charged by the Environmental Protection Agency with pollution.

People can say what they want to say about the Pirates---and it's frequently justified---but Cincinnati's organization is just horrible. The Reds are in shambles from top to bottom, and without Griffey and Dunn they don't even have what little identity they used to have. That's not to say they shouldn't have traded those two, only that it will take time to build anything in Cincinnati, and what little fun it was to watch the Reds---ie, Griffey and Dunn---is now gone.
The Reds did get a couple of good young pitchers last offseason, and apparently they got a few decent prospects when Griffey went to the ChiSox and Dunn to the D-backs.
But their organization, right now, is worse than Pittsburgh's, and you can take that to the bank.
I'm tired of listening to Marty's mouth, too. Without Joe Nuxhall to moderate his arrogant cynicism, Marty is darned near impossible to stomach.
William,
I agree with what you say about the Pirates organization being in better shape than the Reds and, in fact, I've done a post on that (http://blue-collarbaseball.blogspot.com/search?q=pirates+will+win+before+reds).
I hope your brief comment on Joe Nuxhall is not meant to be negative. I can't really tell from your tone. I would just hope that you would show a litte respect since he passed away less than a year ago (http://blue-collarbaseball.blogspot.com/2007/11/remembering-joe-nuxhall.html).
Hi, Deaner. Please re-read my comment. I was NOT saying anything bad about Joe. Rather, I was saying that Joe is the one who had a moderating influence on Marty. WITHOUT JOE---in other words---Marty is 100% Marty, which is frequently 100% pain-in-the-posterior. (Not even Marty's kid is as bad as he is, at least, he hasn't been when I've listened to him.)
So, no disrespect toward Joe was meant or intended here, Deaner, none at all. If the language of my post did not clearly communicate that, I apologize. Hope that helps! :-)
William,
Thanks for clearing things up. I agree, Joe made Marty tolerable.
