Jack Wilson the longest-tenured Pittsburgh player (and my favorite Bucco) could have taken his last at-bat as a Pirate in PNC Park. Unable to field, Jack entered today's game as a pinch hitter and got a hit.
As Pirates fans know, Jack Wilson is the epitome of loyalty and class (from Todd Krise):
Wilson has patrolled the dirt on the left side of PNC Park's infield since the ballpark's inception in 2001. He's appeared in 1,078 games at short for the Pirates, which ranks fifth in club history behind Honus Wagner (1,887), Arky Vaughn (1,381), Dick Groat (1,242) and Jay Bell (1,103).
His consistent play and charity work throughout the city of Pittsburgh have made him a public icon. And his outgoing and humorous personality has made him a fixture in the Pirates' clubhouse.
The last game of the season in Pittsburgh is always a special one as the players meet the fans afterwards. Unfortunately, many players didn't stick around to do this last year - a sign that there needed to be an attitude adjustment for 2008 - I think we've seen that.
