Goals are important. They keep us going on a daily basis. They allow us to better ourselves, mark our progress, and ultimately make us feel accomplished.
The Pittsburgh Pirates do not look like a goal-oriented team right now. They've lost six straight and 17 out of their last 20 games. With 16 games left the Buccos are seriously in jeopardy of losing 100 games in 2008. The Pirates only need 3 more wins to prevent this but right now that doesn't look do-able. The team has simply laid down and given up, something that I didn't think they would do earlier in the season.
So here's a goal Pirates, if you aren't going to play for your own dignity, can you play for ours, the fans. We've already accepted the 16-straight losing seasons (well kind of). Please don't make us have to deal with a 100-loss season. Can you do that for us? I mean surely if you play hard for the next 16 games the baseball Gods will grant you that. What do you think?
Also... I don't have a link to the story, but did anyone read Brandon Moss' Q&A in the last issue of Sporting News? The column asked various major leaguers about their favorite World Series memory as a kid. Moss, a Braves fan growing up, answered with Sid Bream's slide! BREAM! (I know, I have issues). That's not a good way to make friends in the 'burgh, kid. Well... at least he isn't as stupid as LeBron James.

One would think that Pirates management would put the Sid Bream moment on a list of things Pirates players might not want to mention when trying to endear themselves to the fans
