Cubs' Collapse: A Junior High Basketball Analogy

Last night, the Cubs were swept in the NLDS by the LA Dodgers. No big surprise. We all saw it coming. They're chokers. Chris Sabo's Goggles reminds us that Marty Brennaman predicted this long ago:

“…they won’t win it because at the end of the day, they’re still the Chicago Cubs and they will figure out a way to screw this whole thing up.”

The Cubs and their fans were sure big talkers this year - "this is the year, this is the year." Sure they performed great in the regular season and then the pressure is turned on and they can't handle it - 4 errors by the Cubs' infield in one game. Choke - It comes with the uniform.

I'm not beyond it either, but I don't claim to be. The Cubs are kind of like me when I played Junior High basketball. I was pretty darn good in practice and on an outdoor court - tough defense, I could hit the three-ball, and throw a few elbows around - but put me on an indoor court in a game situation and I blew it. Throw me a pass and I would drop it due to sweaty palms. I couldn't even make a free throw because my knees were so shaky.

Maybe it's a bad analogy but that's how I see the Cubs.
