In the wake of signing both CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett to obscene contracts, the New York Yankees have now signed Mark Teixeira to an 8-year contract worth somewhere around $180 million.
I'm no commie but this is absolutely ridiculous. Two Yankees players make more than entire major league teams. Going by 2008 salaries, A-Rod and Jeter's combined annual pay was greater than the entire payroll of the Florida Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, and Pittsburgh Pirates!
All of this coming when the U.S. economy has gone to crap... this just shows you how out of touch the Yankees ownership is with the average fan. Heck, the average fan won't be able to go to a Yankees game in their new stadium.
Teixeira usually gets off to a slow start at the beginning of the season. I hope that the trend stays the same and the NYC media tears into him. I hope that he loses his clean-cut, country club image and gets arrested for jerking off in the parking lot of a Bronx Burger King. I hope that he is booed mercilessly by Baltimore Orioles fans who hoped that he was give the Os a hometown discount. You would have been King in Baltimore, Mark.
Congratulations Mark! You've sold your soul to the evil empire like so many others and made "the devil" (a.k.a. Scott Boras) a much richer man. In a few months you'll remember that there's no price tag on peace of mind.
